Essay Prompts for Macbeth

1. 1972
In retrospect the reader often discovers that the first chapter of a novel
or the opening scene of a drama introduces some of the major themes of the
work. Write an essay about the opening scene of a drama or the first
chapter of a novel in which you explain how it functions in this way.  In
your essay do not merely summarize the plot of the work you are
discussing.

2.1974
Choose a work of literature written before 1900.  Write an essay in which
you present arguments for and against the work's relevance for  person in 1997.
Your own position should emerge in the course of the essay.  You
may refer to works of literature written after 1900 for the purpose of
contrast or comparison.

3. 1988
Choose a distinguished novel or play in which some of the most
significantevents are mental or psychological; for example, awakenings,
discoveries, changes in consciousness. In a well-organized essay, describe how
the authormanages to give these internal events the sense of excitement,
suspense, andclimax usually associated with external action. Do not merely
summarize the plot

Macbeth Lecture Notes

The story is the rise and fall of a great man.

Really no humor or humanity, except the scene with Porter.
The book has many compelling characters.

Everything that made him a great man in the begininng, ends up turning on him.
- But unlike any other shkaespeare character, this is all his fault.

Murder of Ducan
Ambition; story of morality

Witches tell him he's going to be king; Macbeth doesn't question it, shows that he may of already though about it.
-Consumed with regret after killing him.

Lady Macbeth
Pure evil impulse
-Makes sure Macbeth never stray from being evil

Tells Macbeth to be more manly
 -Animus: Masculine
 -Anima: Feminity

Still can't blame her for Macbeth's actions
-He always wants to carry out the deed.

Couldn't handle the regret, unravels and commits suicide.

Macbeth
Macbeth is a mass murderer-- What is thier to admire?
 - His determination, despite what he is determined to do.
-He knows what's its gonna cost him, but he still does it.
-Tools to keep his inner soul at bay.

Nobody suspects he's murdering him.
 -But he's still going crazy

He's always have had the idea of killing the king.
-The witches were just there to give him a push.

He doesn't feel, he doesn't care.

This is very dark play, physically and mentally.

Feats of Wisdom #10

My favorite movie scene is from Dude Where's My Car:

And here is the script I remixed that is kinda like the clip, but in Iambic pentameter:

Hello ma'm, I would like some food to go,
Okay, what will you be having today,
We will gladly have some shrimp fried rice, yo,
And what else will you be having today?

Some soup with our meal will be good too,
And what else will you be having today?
And some of that animal that goes moo,
And what else will you be having today?

I think that will be all today lady,
And what else will you be having today?
Uh that's it, ain't trying to be shady,
And what else will you be having today?

THAT'S IT! Give me the price I have to pay!
And what else will you be having today?

Macbeth Notes

  • Both the literal & symbolic tone of the play is sinister and its central characters are evil
  • When Shakespeare wrote Macbeth in 1606, James I had been King of England for 3 years
    • Symbolized the union of the Scottish & England crowns
    • Fascinated by witchcraft

    Socratic Seminar Recap

    Notes from the seminar;
    - beginning of discovery
    - create extraordinary things, you're not alone
    - ask questions and learn through discussions
    - Taught from childhood to stay in the world
    - life's too shirt to waste
    - even things you love, sometimes becomes work
    - there is always commitment with things you love
    - Tyler Stewart: next genius
    - Thinking out loud
    - be able to question, no matter the answer
    - give it a shot, even if you fail
    - be optimistic about everything in life

These concepts will help me figure out how to keep me motivated past all the grades in school. With these in my brain, I hope to keep moving forward. And find new incentives to keep doing better.
Also with these concepts, I feel like I have new motivation to try my best during the AP test. Knowing that in actually haveing focus for something, will in turn prepare me for the future. Where mentors like Dr. Preston won't exist anymore. And that I'll only have me.
Lastly, with these concepts, I'll will help my fellow friends get inspired and branch out.

    Shakespeare, shaken and stirred

One remix I found with Shakespeare rapping.

This a sonnet about on how to write one in iambic pentameter.
My way of helping somebody learn and having fun. :)

These sonnet poems are old and full of dust
But yet I want to learn to write one well.
To learn new forms for life is quite a must,
I need to learn, so Preston will not yell.

And so I sit, tonight, with mouse in hand,
Creating three new quatrains with a rhyme.
The rhythm flows like life at my command.
The A-B-A-B form consumes my time.

But I’m not done until there’s fourteen lines.
One ending couplet, after three quatrains.
Trying so hard to make one that's all mine,
Takes forever; I have to use my brain.

But I go on, my fourteen lines now done.
Finished, now other's learning has begun..

    Why Dickens wrote Great Expectations.

Charles Dickens wrote the novel Great Expectations because he wanted to show, that even with money, that doesn't automatically make you a "great" and "good" person. It also takes heart. He shows this through, irony. Because at first he was a good and innocent child with no money. But once, he has the desire to become a gentlemen, is when he became corrupted and is more rude when he is a "gentelman".

    Literary Analysis

    Rosencrantz and Guildestern are Dead

    ros and guil -

    Great "Beginnings"

The first 1-15 pgs of Great Expectations:

Pip is an orphan who lives with his sister and her husband. His sister isn't nearly as nice as her husband is. They aren't wealthy, not even close, but they get by with a blacksmith's salary. Pip goes to his parents graves and is attacked by an escaped convict. The man tells Pip to go get one of the tools from his brother in law and not to tell or else "his man" who is always watching will get him. Pip feels bad for him so he steals him some food that his sister made and gives it to him. The man is grateful, but things take a turn for the worse.

Dickens probably wrote Pip like this, because he can also relate to being alone at such a young age. Maybe him too, was also faced with challenges of being on the wrong side of the tracks.

    Great Expectations Meaning

Dicken's named the book Great Expectations, because the whole book is about a boy named Pip who throughout his life is suppopsed to do great things for himself.
When he gets older, a lawyer gives him money and says that now he is better man, and therefore must do great things.

    Poem For The Ages

     Life Is Fine
    Langston Hughes

I went down to the river,
I set down on the bank.
I tried to think but couldn't,
So I jumped in and sank.

I came up once and hollered!
I came up twice and cried!
If that water hadn't a-been so cold
    I might've sunk and died.

But it was Cold in that water! It was cold!

    I took the elevator
    Sixteen floors above the ground.
    I thought about my baby
And thought I would jump down.

I stood there and I hollered!
I stood there and I cried!
If it hadn't a-been so high
    I might've jumped and died.

But it was High up there! It was high!

So since I'm still here livin',
I guess I will live on.
    I could've died for love--
But for livin' I was born

Though you may hear me holler,
And you may see me cry--
    I'll be dogged, sweet baby,
If you gonna see me die.

Life is fine! Fine as wine! Life is fine!
