In retrospect the reader often discovers that the first chapter of a novel
or the opening scene of a drama introduces some of the major themes of the
work. Write an essay about the opening scene of a drama or the first
chapter of a novel in which you explain how it functions in this way. In
your essay do not merely summarize the plot of the work you are
discussing.

2.1974
Choose a work of literature written before 1900. Write an essay in which
you present arguments for and against the work's relevance for person in 1997.
Your own position should emerge in the course of the essay. You
may refer to works of literature written after 1900 for the purpose of
contrast or comparison.

3. 1988
Choose a distinguished novel or play in which some of the most
significantevents are mental or psychological; for example, awakenings,
discoveries, changes in consciousness. In a well-organized essay, describe how
the authormanages to give these internal events the sense of excitement,
suspense, andclimax usually associated with external action. Do not merely
summarize the plotNicole Montoyahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16946413122387297929noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1612231861872340288.post-49918652877953662802012-04-25T11:55:00.003-07:002012-04-25T11:55:52.212-07:00Macbeth Lecture NotesThe story is the rise and fall of a great man.

Really no humor or humanity, except the scene with Porter.
The book has many compelling characters.

Everything that made him a great man in the begininng, ends up turning on him.
- But unlike any other shkaespeare character, this is all his fault.

Murder of Ducan
Ambition; story of morality

Witches tell him he's going to be king; Macbeth doesn't question it, shows that he may of already though about it.
-Consumed with regret after killing him.

Lady Macbeth
Pure evil impulse
-Makes sure Macbeth never stray from being evil

Tells Macbeth to be more manly
-Animus: Masculine
-Anima: Feminity

Still can't blame her for Macbeth's actions
-He always wants to carry out the deed.

Couldn't handle the regret, unravels and commits suicide.

Macbeth
Macbeth is a mass murderer-- What is thier to admire?
- His determination, despite what he is determined to do.
-He knows what's its gonna cost him, but he still does it.
-Tools to keep his inner soul at bay.

Nobody suspects he's murdering him.
-But he's still going crazy

He's always have had the idea of killing the king.
-The witches were just there to give him a push.

He doesn't feel, he doesn't care.

This is very dark play, physically and mentally.
These concepts will help me figure out how to keep me motivated past all the grades in school. With these in my brain, I hope to keep moving forward. And find new incentives to keep doing better.
Also with these concepts, I feel like I have new motivation to try my best during the AP test. Knowing that in actually haveing focus for something, will in turn prepare me for the future. Where mentors like Dr. Preston won't exist anymore. And that I'll only have me.
Lastly, with these concepts, I'll will help my fellow friends get inspired and branch out.Nicole Montoyahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16946413122387297929noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1612231861872340288.post-79236471958058933932012-03-06T21:27:00.002-08:002012-03-07T12:51:43.825-08:00Shakespeare, shaken and stirred
It also takes heart. He shows this through, irony. Because at first he was a good and innocent child with no money. But once, he has the desire to become a gentlemen, is when he became corrupted and is more rude when he is a "gentelman".Nicole Montoyahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16946413122387297929noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1612231861872340288.post-6567420308094612152012-02-02T09:13:00.000-08:002012-02-02T09:13:04.193-08:00Great Expectations QuestionsIt's test time!!
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Pip is an orphan who lives with his sister and her husband. His sister isn't nearly as nice as her husband is. They aren't wealthy, not even close, but they get by with a blacksmith's salary. Pip goes to his parents graves and is attacked by an escaped convict. The man tells Pip to go get one of the tools from his brother in law and not to tell or else "his man" who is always watching will get him. Pip feels bad for him so he steals him some food that his sister made and gives it to him. The man is grateful, but things take a turn for the worse.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Dickens probably wrote Pip like this, because he can also relate to being alone at such a young age. I set down on the bank.
I tried to think but couldn't,
I came up once and hollered!
I came up twice and cried!
If that water hadn't a-been so cold
But it was Cold in that water! It was cold!
I took the elevator
Sixteen floors above the ground.
I thought about my baby
And thought I would jump down.
The plot of this book is about a boy named Huck and a slave named Jim who are trying to make it to the free states in America. At first, Huck is living with his dad who sadly beast him every night, so Huck sets up a plan and runs away. When he runs away to an island, it is there where he meets Jim. From there they try to make it to the free states, but they have many conflicts along the way. From cops and con-men, to a family vendetta that Huck is accidently in the middle of. One conflict, even gets Jim imprisoned. So Huck must save him from a family's house, who happens to be Tom Sawyer's aunt and uncle who mistake Huck for Tom. Coincidentally, Tom happens to show up also, but he goes along with Huck's lie. With Tom in the picture, he consieves this elaborate plan to freeing Jim. It's successful, but in the process Tom gets his leg shot, so they have to go back and save them. In the end, Huck and Jim find out that Jim has been freed for two months, because his owner died and in the will sated he was free. This lady also wants to adopt Huck, but he says no, because he tired of being "civilized".

2. "technically" Twain stated that in fact there is no moral, theme or anything to the story. It is in fact, just a story for entertainment. To me though, I think the theme of the story is to know the real truth in the face of adversity. Huck was presented with many occasions where he could of easily turned Jim in because it was the "right thing" yo turn a slave in. He knew though, that in fact Jim was a real person and that even though was going to go to "hell". The right thing to do was to help set Jim free. People have to realize that there is the "society's truths and right and wrongs" and the "real truths and right and wrongs".

3. The tone of this book is free spirited and lively, with a undertone of seriousness.

But I reckon I got to light out for the territory ahead of the rest, because Aunt Sally she’s going to adopt me and sivilize me, and I can’t stand it. I been there before.

Persons attempting to find a motive in this narrative will be prosecuted; persons attempting to find a moral in it will be banished; persons attempting to find a plot in it will be shot.

I was a-trembling, because I'd got to decide, forever, betwixt two things, and I knowed it. I studied a minute, sort of holding my breath, and then says to myself: All right, then, I'll GO to hell."

4. Five literary terms that helped me were;

Mood: Throughout the whole story, you had really mixed emotions, because you can go from laughing your head off because the vendetta of the two families was completly pointless, to sadness because you realize innocent children in the family are dying just because they think it's a "duty" to fight for their family. When really, the whole reason is pointless. It helped me learn, that Twain wanted to show very serious matters in a form of comedy so it wouldn't be taken too seriously. Hence, a great satire.

Characterization: When reading the book and analyzing Huck's character, It's obvious that he is the "Gandolf" of the whole book. He questions ideas and situations in a way that nobody could ever imagined, and at such a young age too. "What's the use you learning to do right, when it's troublesome to do right and ain't no trouble to do wrong, and the wages is just the same?"

Stereotypes: The book's big steroetype is the slavery, and the fact that everybody thinks that since you're a slave you're automatically not really a human being, and in fact a piece of property. Huck of course, sees it differently and slowly realizes that Jim is just like him and just because he's black doesn't mean he's not a person. "Good gracious! anybody hurt?"

"No'm. Killed a nigger."

"Well, it's lucky; because sometimes people do get hurt. "

Falling Action: After Tom shows up in the book, the whole meaning and them of the book slowly dies down. With Tom in the picture, he starts to act childish and makes Huck revert back to being a follower instead of a leader. I feel like Twain did this just to make his statement about not having a meaning concrete. because in the end, Huck really learned not that much, because he reverted back to his old ways.

Allusion: During the book, one of the character's quote Hamlet, but says it in the face that relates to him and how he looks at the world. "To be, or not to be; that is the bare bodkin,
That makes calamity of so long life."

I realized that both readings are quite similar, because they both talked about how humans think in terms of life and what is real and expected.
Plato described humans as ignorant human beings, saying that whatever we saw must be real, even though they are merely shadows. While Satre described humans as ignorant in the sense that they think they need physical objects to "torture" them. When in reality, people just torture themselves with their thoughts and other people around them. Both of their extended metaphors give enlightenment on hard complex ideas and make them easier to follow and understand.Nicole Montoyahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16946413122387297929noreply@blogger.com2
